His application for naturalisation states he arrived from South Africa in 1888; do you have information on an earlier arrival? A pity no-one seems to know details of when or where he died, he would have had a long and eventful life. From what you have noted I assume you have looked at the National Archives of Australia's index and at the National Library's Trove site. The NAA files on Aronovski are not yet digitised, so the next step might be to request that (or visit the Archive in person). For clarification, although the NAA index shows his place of birth as Kolno, Russia, that seems a transcription error as it would now be Kaunas (or would have been Kovno in Russian, Kowna in Polish or Kovne in Yiddish before WW2). If you can determine the year that the family left Lithuania for Palestine, there may be a possibility of locating an internal Lithuanian passport online.Jonas Mockunashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13529177649157007496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1243392824238977492.post-40013119773233595662021-03-09T17:35:24.552+11:002021-03-09T17:35:24.552+11:00I am researching Judelis Jehuda Aronovski, (father...I am researching Judelis Jehuda Aronovski, (father Abraham) who was born in Kolno Russia in 1914. He was Jewish and his family moved to Palestine (date unknown). He came to Sydney, Australia in 1941 and was in partnership here, with a man named Heffernan, in a toymaking business.
He left the partnership in Aug 1941 and in Feb 1942 enlisted in the Army as NX88660. He was discharged in June 1945.
He was naturalised as Australian in April 1948.
Is anyone aware of this person or his family. Once Russia allied with Britain, all male Russian nationals in Australia were told to either apply for the Australian Army or expect deportation back to Russia. Here's a couple of extra points. The ship's prefix was USAT, not USS. USAT stood for "United States Army Transport". Secondly, to give you an idea of rural the ACT still was in 1947, the Census of that year enumerated 17,000 living outside urban Canberra, 2,000 more than in the suburbs.Ann Tündern-Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13162627848003952705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1243392824238977492.post-56443965976479010142016-04-24T15:23:30.023+10:002016-04-24T15:23:30.023+10:00Great work.
